“And yet” Practice
Throughout the semester ENG 110 has discussed different paths that lead to social change. The most recent path we have learned about is through Charles Duhigg. Charles Duhigg believes that social change derives from strong ties, weak ties, and for a person or group to be able to have the power to make a large group of people to work towards a singular goal, and I wholeheartedly agree. Strong ties are close relationships such as friends and family. Weak ties are distant connections. Duhigg discusses the boycott of city of Montgomery’s bus line. Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus to a white man, so she was put under arrest. This lead to a huge civil rights movement. What is interesting is that this had happened before Rosa Parks, but there was no publicity. When it occurred to Rosa Parks it was different. This is because she had many connections throughout the community. She had weak and strong connections in every socio economic class, so when this happened to her a lot of people decided to fight for her. This is where Duhigg’s idea of the path to social change comes in. Duhigg discusses that weak ties are crucial to social change, if not the most important, and I 100% agree. In the case of Rosa Parks because she was able to know a lot of people in the community those weak connections spread out even more. More and more people heard about the movement starting a social change. The strong connections played a big role, but the weak ties spread to more people.
