Charles Duhigg & Social Change

Charles Duhigg’s ideas about social change are very interesting. He clearly defines the steps that historians, sociologists say show up during large revolutions or movements. Duhigg states, “A movement starts because of the social habits of friendship and the strong ties between close acquaintances” (87). He later continues talking about the other two steps. The movement grows through the community because of the weak ties that hold it together. Lastly, the movement maintains it’s pace because leaders encourage participants to form new habits, which later leads to a rejuvenated sense of self. These ideas are very interesting, and they make a lot of sense. To understand the steps strong and weak ties must be defined. Strong ties are close friends and family, and weak ties are acquaintances. Like used in the piece Rosa Parks is an incredible example of this discovery. Parks had a lot of influence in her community, so when she was arrested everyone heard through and was affected either through a weak or strong connection. It started with a friend of Parks hearing that she was arrested, and began to help. After through weak connections more and more people became involved, and finally the social movement took off because of the leaders encouragement or even pressure. Such examples of this are leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He lead the movement for more and more people to follow.
