The perfect recipe to starting a nationwide movement towards protecting the planet from climate change is education, connections, and refusal. Education is a very important step in order to really start a movement. In the climate change movement it is very important for people to understand what is really happening. A great person that really educates is Bill Mckibben. His movie is called “Do the Math” which is perfect because it focuses on three numbers that are the most crucial parts of climate change. Here is an example of Mckibben educating the audience: “Shall we work the numbers? There are three and they’re easy. The first one is two degrees. That’s how much the world has said it would be safe to let the planet warm” (4). This shows that Mckibben does put focus onto education. This makes sense because nobody would put a lot of time and effort into a movement that they do not understand. The next step is connections. In order for someone or a group to start a movement the word must spread, and the way to do that people must have connections either weak or strong to spread the word. Duhigg discusses the idea of how movements start, and how strong and weak ties play a crucial role. Duhigg believes that weak ties may be more influential than close ties because the word can spread to greater lengths (91). The last step to really create an influential movement is refusal. Spreading the world and educating people on the topic is very important, but so is refusal. In the climate change fight refusing certain things that fuel the fire is diminishing the purpose of the movement. For example Moore discusses how people fight to refuse things such as running sneakers, but then we continue to buy the running sneakers. By actually refusing certain things it not only helps climate change directly, but it also starts a conversation that leads to more and more people joining the movement.
