Safe Space Radio: Out-Takes: The Unheard Stories of LGBTQ Teens

The audio in this specific podcast is very, very important. In particular story from a girl named Emily, a gay teen from Kennebunk, the audio switched quite frequently, but it was important to the story. At first they were talking about how her coming out experience was very good. In the background they were playing upbeat music, but then the audio cut out , because the grandmother snapped at Emily saying “You need to stop!” Eventually Emily talked to her grandmother and resolved the problem, and the music picked up again. This is important, because it adds to the heavy themes in the audio. The way the music switches depending on the type of story that is being told is very effective. Another thing that works very well is having many people tell different stories, and that it is not just one person talking the whole time. Hallward brings in other people to show the listeners real stories and experiences instead of stories she is just talking about it. By doing this Hallward connects more with the listeners, because they know it is real. This podcast is actually similar to Martha Hall’s books, because they are both doing things differently with the source that they are presenting on. Hallward is changing things, by talking about topics that are not often talked about in a real way, and Hall’s books do the same thing. She shows the true side of cancer, including all the pain and confusion that goes along with it. Instead of listening to people’s experiences, Hall shows it, but it does the same thing. By listening or looking it still inflicts emotion to the audience.
