Martha Hall

Martha Hall

Exploring Martha Hall’s books was an incredible experience. Hall tore down the walls of how a story book should be structured. She took her life experiences and struggles and turned it not only into books, but also art. Martha Hall got diagnosed with breast cancer, and decided to share her experiences through books. One book called “Blue Moon” was a very touching piece. There were pages beautifully drawn of the ocean and moon, connecting it to her illness. Another book looked like it was burned in places on showing certain words such as pain. These words and the style of the book are very important. Typically when hearing cancer stories you hear the survivor stories that give people hope of recovery. With Martha Hall she shares the rough side of the cancer. She expresses the pain and the suffering that occurs, and is raw and open about it. One storybook she shared was about her doctors. It was a book about what five different doctors told her about her diagnosis. They all say the same thing, and are very scientific about it. One quote that I remember vividly is “do you want to me to talk over the phone or in person?” Hall expresses that some  doctors do not show any sympathy, and it shows that sometimes doctors are all business and may forget that they are in fact talking to real people instead of patients.
