If Your House is on Fire
“If Your House is on Fire” is an interview focusing on the environmental efforts and ideas made by Kathleen Dean Moore. Moore has a strategy for social change, and it is very interesting. Moore believes that if the ethics and culture of a community change, overall things can lead to a huge social change. Moore states “If the culture forces us to live in ways we don’t believe in, then we have to change the culture. Given the urgency of the question, we may need to start with conscientious objection. There are things we must refuse to do, and there are costs for that refusal” (6). This quote shows that Moore thinks that if something is not working or if the community no longer agrees with it that things can be refused and changed in order to fix the problem. Moore compares this way of thinking with the Vietnam War. She wants people to say “Hell No” to the ways of the human consumption the way humans did to the Vietnam War. Refusal is a very important thing to do in the opinion of Moore. Moore also believes that telling stories can help spread the word about this crisis that humans are experiencing. She states “We need to tell new stories to describe who we are in relation to the land, to honor what’s been lost, to help us understand our kinships, to affirm what we care about, to explore the difference between right and wrong, moral and immoral” (9). By telling stories Moore believes that it can help make people realize what they are doing to the world, and it shows them what is right and wrong.
