Safe Space: Social Cohesion?

Safe Space Radio, created by board certified psychiatrist Anne Hallward has made significant moves in society, and is a great example of social cohesion. Safe Space Radio is a site made specifically for people to talk about subjects that may normally be shameful or embarrassing. This radio breaks down societal norms that it is not okay to talk about personal shameful things. The mission of the Safe Space Radio is to “inspire courageous conversations, break down the barriers that divide [people], and create compassionate communities.”. Social cohesion is defined as members of a community cooperating in order to prosper as a whole group. The mission of safe space could be replaced as the definition of social cohesion.

Anne Hallward’s Safe Space Radio targets many audiences, bringing many people together. With over 300 podcasts she targets topics such as LGBTQ support, people struggling with mental health issues, grief, and many more topics. The podcast that I listened to was “Talking About Political Differences with Sheila Heen”. During this segment Heen and Hallward discuss uniting people through their political differences. They look at the argumentation between the two sides, and discuss bringing them together through argument. Heen talks about how during an argument people may need to stop arguing and really try to listen to the other party and understand their side. By trying to understand it creates a really effective discussion even though on other sides. This podcast is really important, and does encourage social cohesion. This encourages social cohesion, because even though the podcast is discussing opposing parties it unites them by creating an effective conversation that leads to a universal understanding. These opposing sides are still disagreeing, but coming to a mutual respect for each others opinions can unite a community.
