Hallward’s Ted Talk: A Resonating Claim
Dr. Anne Hallward, psychiatrist and co founder of Safe Space Radio made many great claims in “How our silenced stories can change the world”, but there was one statement that really stood out. The statement was “Because our voluntary vulnerability, our willingness to share these stories, is an act of courage. It is an act of generosity. And finally, it is an act of cultural leadership.” This claim really stood out to me, because it shows how the unity of people sharing their deep shameful stories reduces stigma and brings people together. The premise of the Ted Talk discusses how people hide their shameful stories. Hallward believes that when people share these stories it reduces a stigma that was culturally placed. As people continue to share these stories it not only helps the person sharing, but it also helps a person that is just listening to the story. This quote really captured my attention, because it is really relevant. In these times people are really starting to be more open about their lives and potential shameful stories. Every movement going on now has been because someone gained the courage to share the things they keep secret. This leads to people inspiring others. A huge example of this is the Me Too movement. Angela Davis also mentioned this in speech when addressing the R Kelly scandal. Woman finally stood up to this man, and it lead to other girls coming forward as well. Davis also discussed Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick stood up for his beliefs, and many other football players followed too. Listening to the stories that cause embarrassment and shame encourage people to do the same thing. This courageous act leads to a chain reaction. An example of this is the legalization of gay marriage. People that come out of the closet encourage other people to do the same thing. Hallward states “what that does, is it feeds right back to the sources of external shame, and it begins to reduce their power.” This quote is discussing the legalization of gay marriage. Because people were courageous enough to share their ‘stories’, it led to a country wide movement to support the rights of LGBT. These great examples mentioned are why I picked “Because our voluntary vulnerability, our willingness to share these stories, is an act of courage. It is an act of generosity. And finally, it is an act of cultural leadership.” as a claim that resonated with me.
